AB OBJECTIVE: To describe 5 cases of systemic meningococcal infection with
meningitis in HIV infected children. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of
the case reports of 600 children admitted in Colentina Hospital for
symptomatic HIV infection and AIDS between 1991-1993. RESULTS: Five out
of 9 purulent meningitis were meningococcal, confirmed by cerebrospinal
fluid (CSF) smear, cultures and counterimmunoelectrophoresis. Children
were nonvertically infected in the first year of life through parenteral
way. No zidovudine had been given. Clinical findings were: specific rush
(4 cases), gigantic herpes lesions (3 cases), infectious monoarthritis
(1 case). After 10 days of Penicillin G therapy CSF became normal.
CONCLUSIONS: No pneumococcal meningitis was described in 600 HIV
infected children. Two cases of HIV infection were diagnosed at
admission for meningococcal meningitis with gigantic herpes lesions.
